Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025:

Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025: Hindu devotees are observing Dev Uthani Ekadashi, a highly significant festival, on November 1-2, 2025. Also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi, this auspicious day marks the symbolic awakening of Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu trinity, after a four-month period of divine slumber.

The festival holds immense cultural importance as it signals the end of “Chaturmaas,” a four-month period considered inauspicious for new beginnings. With Lord Vishnu’s awakening, the embargo on auspicious ceremonies is lifted, and the season for events like marriages, engagements, and housewarmings officially commences.

Key Dates and Timings for 2025

While the Ekadashi Tithi (the 11th lunar day) begins on November 1, the primary fast will be observed on November 2, based on the Udaya Tithi (the tithi prevailing at sunrise).

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: 09:11 AM on November 1, 2025 (Saturday)
  • Ekadashi Tithi Ends: 07:31 AM on November 2, 2025 (Sunday)
  • Fasting Day (Vrat): Sunday, November 2, 2025
  • Parana (Fast-Breaking) Time: 01:11 PM to 03:23 PM on November 2, 2025
  • Hari Vasara End Moment: 12:55 PM on November 2, 2025

For devotees following Gauna Ekadashi, the fast is also observed on November 2, but the Parana will take place the following morning, November 3, between 06:34 AM and 08:46 AM.

The Significance: End of Chaturmaas

The festival’s core significance lies in its timing. According to Hindu scriptures, Dev Uthani Ekadashi concludes the four-month Chaturmaas period, during which Lord Vishnu is believed to be resting in the Ksheer Sagar (the cosmic ocean of milk).

During this four-month span, auspicious activities such as marriages, mundan (first haircut ceremony), and griha pravesh (housewarming) are traditionally postponed. Dev Uthani Ekadashi celebrates the day Lord Vishnu awakens and resumes his duties, thereby giving the “green light” for these important life events to resume.

Across the country, temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his avatar, Lord Krishna, are often lavishly decorated with flowers and lights to honor the day.

Spiritual Importance and Rituals

The importance of this Ekadashi is also detailed in religious texts like the Skanda Purana. It is believed that observing a sincere fast (Vrat) on this day can help a devotee attain Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death) and absolve them of past sins.

Devotees typically observe the day with several key rituals:

  • Holy Bath: The day begins with a purifying bath.
  • Puja: Homes are cleaned, and an idol of Lord Vishnu is placed on a wooden plank. A diya (lamp) filled with desi ghee is lit.
  • Offerings: The deity is honored with offerings of Tulsi Patra (holy basil leaves), fresh fruits, sweets, panchamrit, sugarcane, and water chestnuts.
  • Awakening the Lord: In a special ritual, women sing devotional songs (bhajans), ring bells, and clap to symbolically wake the Lord and seek his blessings.
  • Illumination: In the evening, homes are lit with diyas and lamps to celebrate the divine awakening.

Mantras for the Day

Devotees often chant specific mantras to honor Lord Vishnu. Common chants include:

  • Om Namo Narayanaye..!!
  • Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaye..!!
  • Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram, Ram Narayanam Janaki Vallabham..!!
