Lucknow – The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR against the team of the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat. The complaint says the title hurts the feelings of the Brahmin community and spreads hate. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself ordered the police to take action.

The film stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role. It was announced recently and its teaser came out on February 3. Many people felt the word “Pandat” in the title was a direct insult to Brahmins, who are often called Pandit. “Ghooskhor” means someone who takes bribes. So the title roughly translates to “Bribe-Taking Pandit”.

Within hours of the teaser release, angry messages started flooding social media. People asked why the makers chose this name. They said Netflix would never dare make a film called “Ghooskhor Maulana” or “Ghooskhor Dalit”. Many warned of boycott and court cases.

On February 6, the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow filed the FIR. The case is under sections 196, 299, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66 of the IT Act. These sections deal with promoting enmity, hurting religious feelings, intentional insult and public mischief.

What the Film Is About

Ghooskhor Pandat is a crime thriller. Manoj Bajpayee plays a corrupt police officer named Ajay Dikshit. People call him “Pandat” as a nickname. The story shows how his plan to make quick money goes wrong when he gets caught in a big international conspiracy. The teaser shows him as a tough, morally grey cop in Delhi.

The makers have clearly said the film is fully fictional. It is not based on any real person or community. Still, the title became the centre of the storm.

How the Backlash Started

The teaser dropped during Netflix’s big content event. People liked Manoj Bajpayee’s intense look. But the title shocked many. Soon, hashtags like #BoycottNetflix and #ChangeTheTitle started trending.

Some sample comments on social media were:

  • “Can they make Ghooskhor Muslim? No. Then why target Brahmins?”
  • “This is clear casteist slur. We will see you in court.”
  • “Brahmins are soft target. Shame on Netflix.”

A public interest petition also reached the Delhi High Court asking for a stay on the film.

CM Yogi Adityanath Orders FIR

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took the matter very seriously. He directed the Lucknow police to register a case immediately. The government said any attempt to hurt caste or religious feelings will not be tolerated.

Senior police officers confirmed that complaints came from many Brahmin organisations. They feared protests and disturbance of peace. That is why quick action was taken.

Mayawati Supports Brahmin Community

BSP chief Mayawati also spoke strongly. She called the title “casteist” and demanded a complete ban on the film. In her statement she said:

“It is a matter of great sorrow that Pandits are being shown as bribe-takers in films. This insults the entire Brahmin community. BSP strongly condemns this. We demand that the Central government ban such films immediately. The FIR registered by Lucknow police is the right step.”

Mayawati’s statement is important because Brahmins are a key vote bank in Uttar Pradesh. With assembly elections coming in 2027, every party is watching caste equations closely.

Filmmakers Pull Down All Promos

Director and writer Neeraj Pandey issued a statement on Instagram. He wrote:

“Our film is a fictional cop drama, and the term ‘Pandat’ is used simply as a colloquial name for a fictional character. The story focuses on an individual’s actions and choices and does not comment on or represent any caste, religion, or community.

We understand that the title has caused hurt to some viewers. We genuinely acknowledge those feelings. In light of these concerns, we have decided to take down all promotional materials for the time being. We look forward to sharing the film with audiences soon.”

Manoj Bajpayee also shared the statement and added his own words:

“The film is about one man’s journey and not a statement about any community. We respect public feelings.”

Netflix India has not given any official comment yet, but all promos have been removed from its platforms.

Why ‘Pandat’ Became Controversial

In north India, “Pandit” or “Pandat” is a common respectful address for Brahmins. Many Brahmin families use it as a surname too. Linking it with “Ghooskhor” (bribery) felt like stereotyping an entire community as corrupt.

Film experts say cinema has to be careful with community names. In the past, films like Aarakshan and some web series faced similar protests. Makers usually change titles or add disclaimers when such issues arise.

One industry body, the Film Makers Combine (FMC), also said the title was never officially approved by them. They warned the producers against using it illegally.

Political Angle in Uttar Pradesh

Brahmins form an important part of society in UP. Both BJP and BSP are trying to keep them happy. Yogi Adityanath’s quick order shows the government does not want any unrest. Mayawati’s support for Brahmins is also seen as an attempt to bring upper castes closer to BSP ahead of 2027 polls.

This is not the first time cinema has landed in caste trouble in UP. Many films and shows have been asked to change names or scenes in the last few years.

What Will Happen Next?

The police will now investigate the case. They will record statements from the complainants and perhaps from the makers’ side. The film’s release date is not announced yet. It may get delayed because of this controversy.

The Delhi High Court petition is still pending. If the court gives any order, it can change things further.

Many people on social media are now waiting to see the full film. They say once the story is clear, the title issue may look different. But for now, the makers have taken a wise step by removing promos and showing respect for public sentiment.
