New Delhi – India’s favourite low-cost airline IndiGo has turned into a nightmare for lakhs of passengers this week. In just three days (December 2–4), the airline has cancelled more than 785 flights and delayed over 1,500 others. Long queues, crying children, angry shouting and people sleeping on airport floors – these scenes are playing out in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and almost every big airport.
Many passengers missed weddings, job interviews, exams and even last rites of family members. Re-booking on other airlines is costing 3–5 times the original price.
What exactly went wrong?
The biggest reason is a new safety rule that started on 1 November 2025.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) made it compulsory for every pilot and cabin crew member to get:
- 48 hours weekly rest (earlier only 36 hours)
- Only 2 night landings per week (earlier 6 were allowed)
These rules are to stop tiredness and make flying safer. Pilots and crew welcomed the change, but IndiGo says they never expected so many people to take rest together.
On top of that:
- Winter fog has started in north India
- Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu because of Cyclone Ditwah
- A country-wide check-in system glitch on December 3 All these hit at the same time.

Real passenger stories
Rohan Sharma, 29, Pune to Delhi: “My sister’s wedding is on December 5. My 7 AM flight was cancelled without any SMS. I paid ₹28,000 for Air India – earlier IndiGo ticket was ₹4,800. Still don’t know if I will reach on time.”

Priya Mehta, 21, Hyderabad to Chennai: “Tomorrow is my semester exam. Flight cancelled twice. IndiGo only says ‘refund in 7 days’. Other flights are ₹35,000 now. I am sitting at the airport since morning.”
An elderly couple going to Varanasi for a family funeral: “We are senior citizens. No one is helping. We have been waiting 14 hours.”
What IndiGo is saying

Official IndiGo statement (4 PM, Dec 4): “We are extremely sorry for the trouble. The new crew rest rules, winter schedule, bad weather and a small technical issue came together suddenly. We are fixing schedules for the next 48 hours. Full refund or free date change is available to every affected passenger.”
What DGCA and government are saying
Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu (evening press conference): “Passenger first. We have ordered extra food, water and resting areas at all airports. DGCA is meeting IndiGo every day. Safety rules will NOT be rolled back.”
DGCA official statement: “IndiGo was told about these rules one year ago. Poor planning cannot be an excuse. If needed, we will give some of their slots to Air India and Akasa so passengers don’t suffer.”
Captain Sam Thomas, President of pilots’ body ALPA India: “Airlines knew this was coming. They kept buying new planes but did not hire enough pilots and crew. Now they want to blame safety rules. Safety of 2,000 passengers in the sky is bigger than any profit.”
Stock market reaction
IndiGo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation share fell 3.2% today and closed at ₹5,412. In three days the company lost nearly ₹5,500 crore in market value.
When will it become normal?
IndiGo says from December 6–7 most flights will run normally because they are cancelling some flights in advance and adjusting crew rosters. But fog season has just started, so some delays can still happen.
What you should do right now
- Keep checking flight status on IndiGo app/website every hour.
- Reach airport 4–5 hours early even if it shows “on time”.
- If cancelled – take full refund or free re-booking.
- Keep hotel/food bills – many passengers are getting extra money.
- Complain on AirSewa app – DGCA is reading every complaint.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. Should I book IndiGo for December or January travel?
Wait till December 8–10 if possible. Right now Air India, Akasa and Vistara flights are running normally.
Q2. Will IndiGo pay for my costly new ticket or hotel?
Officially no, but because the problem is 100% because of the airline, many passengers are getting extra compensation. Ask politely at the counter and keep all bills.
Q3. Why only IndiGo is suffering so much?
IndiGo flies 60% of all domestic passengers and has the maximum night flights. Other airlines planned better.
Q4. Will the government cancel the new rest rules?
No. These rules match international safety standards. India was late in bringing them.
Q5. My flight is on December 12. Should I cancel now?
No need. Wait till December 8. IndiGo says things will be normal by then.
This is the biggest passenger crisis in Indian skies after Covid. Everyone hopes IndiGo learns quickly – fast growth is good, but proper planning and safety come first.
