New Delhi – The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, heard the case of Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known climate activist from Ladakh. Mr. Wangchuk is currently in jail. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has asked the court to release him. The court made some important decisions in this hearing. The next hearing will be on October 29, 2025.

The court said that Mr. Wangchuk can share his notes about his time in jail with his wife. This is a significant step because it will help his lawyers prepare his case. The court also allowed his wife to make changes to her petition. A petition is a formal written request to a court. Now that the government has explained why they arrested Mr. Wangchuk, his wife can challenge those reasons directly.

The case is being heard by two judges, Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice N V Anjaria. They are looking into why Mr. Wangchuk was arrested under a very strict law called the National Security Act (NSA). This law allows the government to keep someone in jail without a trial if they think that person is a threat to the country’s security.

What Happened in Court

During the hearing, the main lawyer for Mr. Wangchuk’s wife, Mr. Kapil Sibal, told the court that it was important for Mr. Wangchuk to be able to communicate with his legal team. He said that Mr. Wangchuk had written some notes about his detention and needed to give them to his wife.

The government’s main lawyer, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said the government had no problem with this. He agreed that Mr. Wangchuk could share his notes. However, he also told the court that he was worried about one thing. He said that he hoped this sharing of notes would not be used later to say that the government was delaying the case. The court listened to this but did not make a final decision on this point.

The most important outcome of the hearing was the court’s permission for Ms. Angmo to amend, or change, her original petition. When she first went to the court, she did not know the exact reasons for her husband’s arrest. The government has now given those reasons in a formal document called an affidavit. By allowing her to amend her petition, the court is making sure that she can directly argue against the government’s reasons for his detention. This makes the case clearer and more focused on the main issues.

Why Was Sonam Wangchuk Arrested?

Sonam Wangchuk is a famous engineer and innovator. He is known for his work in improving education in Ladakh and for his efforts to protect the environment. He even inspired a character in a famous Bollywood movie. For a long time, he has been a leading voice in the demand for special status for Ladakh.

The people of Ladakh, a region high in the Himalayas, have been asking the government to give them statehood. They also want to be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The Sixth Schedule gives special protections to tribal areas. It helps them protect their land, culture, and way of life.

Mr. Wangchuk was leading peaceful protests and even went on a long hunger strike to bring attention to these demands. However, on September 24, a protest in Leh, the main city of Ladakh, turned violent. Sadly, four people were killed, and many others were injured.

Two days later, on September 26, the police arrested Mr. Wangchuk. They used the National Security Act (NSA). The government has accused him of making speeches that encouraged the violence. After his arrest, he was moved from Ladakh to a jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, which is very far from his home.

The Government’s Side of the Story

The Ladakh administration has given its reasons for the arrest to the Supreme Court. In a sworn statement, the District Magistrate of Leh said that Mr. Wangchuk was involved in activities that were harmful to the security of the state and public order.

The government claims that it followed all the rules when it arrested him. They say that he was told why he was being detained and that he had the right to challenge his detention. The government’s affidavit also states that Mr. Wangchuk is being treated well in jail. He has been seen by doctors and is in good health. They also mentioned that he has been allowed to meet his wife and lawyers.

The government’s main point is that the arrest was necessary to prevent more trouble in a sensitive border region like Ladakh. They believe his actions and words were creating a dangerous situation.

Sonam Wangchuk’s Family’s Arguments

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, strongly disagrees with the government. In her petition to the Supreme Court, she says that his arrest is illegal. She argues that the government is trying to silence a peaceful and respected activist.

Her petition states that Mr. Wangchuk has always followed the path of non-violence, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. His protests, she says, were a way for him to use his constitutional right to free speech. She believes the government is unfairly labeling him as a threat.

Her lawyers have argued that the real reason for his arrest is to stop the movement for Ladakh’s rights. They have also pointed out that moving him to a jail so far away in Jodhpur makes it very difficult for his family and lawyers to meet him. This, they argue, is another way to put pressure on him. His wife has even claimed that she is being followed and watched by people in Delhi, which she says is a violation of her rights as a citizen.

What This Case Means

This case is being watched very closely all over India and even in other parts of the world. It brings up many important questions about the right to protest and the use of strong laws like the NSA.

On one side is the government’s duty to maintain law and order, especially in a region that is close to the country’s borders. On the other side are the fundamental rights of citizens to express their opinions and demand political rights peacefully.

Sonam Wangchuk is not just an ordinary activist. He is a winner of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is sometimes called Asia’s Nobel Prize. His arrest has been criticized by many human rights groups and environmental organizations. They see it as an attempt by the government to crush dissent.

The Supreme Court’s role in this case is very important. It has to balance the government’s concerns about national security with the individual’s right to liberty. The decisions it makes will have a big impact on how such cases are handled in the future.

For now, Sonam Wangchuk remains in jail. His supporters continue to protest for his release. The next hearing on October 29 will be another important day in this legal battle. Everyone will be waiting to see how the Supreme Court moves forward in a case that is about the rights of an individual and the future of an entire region.
