Wedding season excitement is soaring among Indian traders, who are anticipating a massive ₹5 lakh crore in business following a record-breaking Diwali.

Following a phenomenal surge in sales during the Diwali festival, Indian traders are setting their sights on the upcoming wedding season, anticipating a colossal business volume of around ₹5 lakh crore (approximately $60 billion). This optimistic forecast comes from the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the country’s leading industry body for the trading community.

The focus of the trading community has now entirely shifted to the wedding season, which is scheduled to commence shortly after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on November 1st and will continue until December 14th. CAIT estimates that millions of weddings are expected to take place across the country during this concentrated period, a phenomenon that is poised to revive the bustling, celebratory atmosphere and high consumer spending witnessed during the recent Diwali period in markets nationwide. The remarkable consumer enthusiasm and the subsequent record-breaking sales achieved during the Diwali period have instilled a high degree of confidence among traders for the subsequent festive cycles.

Praveen Khandelwal, National Secretary General of CAIT, expressed great enthusiasm regarding the shift in market focus. “After the bumper business of Diwali, traders are now fully gearing up for the wedding season,” he stated. He further projected that “new records of sales are expected to be set in sectors such as gold and silver, jewellery, apparel, gifts, decoration, furniture, catering, hotels, beauty, and electronics.” This comprehensive list underscores the extensive ripple effect that a high-spending season like the Indian wedding period has across numerous sectors of the economy, touching everything from luxury goods to essential services.

The market buoyancy and consumer spending spree have been consistently strong following Diwali, according to CAIT. The industry body highlighted that immediately after the main festival, the celebration of Govardhan Puja, which is a symbolic representation of protection from natural calamities and environmental conservation, was celebrated with immense zeal across the nation. This celebration led to a significant increase in the sales of various specific items, including puja thalis (prayer platters), clay lamps (diyas), pure ghee, milk and curd, sandalwood, flowers and garlands, sweets, decorative utensils, clothing, and steel utensils. This indicates a sustained period of high demand for traditional and consumable goods even in the immediate post-Diwali period.

Following Govardhan Puja, the Annakut festival, a celebration expressing gratitude towards the goddess Annapurna, was also marked with great festivity and participation across the country. The continuous succession of festivals has maintained a high footfall and steady transaction volume in the marketplaces, preventing any immediate post-Diwali slump in commercial activity.

Simultaneously, preparations for Chhath Puja, a major festival primarily celebrated in parts of North and East India, are currently in full swing across the country. Scheduled to be celebrated on October 27th and 28th, the sales for various essential Chhath Puja items have already gained significant momentum. These items include fruits, sugarcane, coconuts, thekua (a traditional sweet), bamboo baskets and platters, sarees, brass and bronze utensils, clay lamps, and other diverse puja materials. The staggered nature of these major festivals ensures a prolonged and consistent period of commercial activity and consumption, benefiting traders across different regions and categories.

Khandelwal commented on the continued robust market activity, saying, “Even after the record-breaking sales during Diwali, heavy crowds of customers are being seen in markets across the country.” He emphasized that this sustained enthusiasm “clearly reflects the growing excitement of the public towards Indian festivals and their increasing faith in domestic products under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ approach.” This sentiment highlights a perceived nationalistic boost to local products and businesses, which many traders believe is contributing significantly to the current market success.

Furthermore, he provided specific data points, stating that during Diwali and the subsequent major festivals, the sale of puja materials, sweets, apparel, gift products, utensils, and electronic goods witnessed a substantial increase, registering a growth of 25-30 percent. This high percentage growth across multiple key consumption categories is a strong indicator of a widespread increase in purchasing power and consumer confidence.

The projected ₹5 lakh crore business for the wedding season represents a major financial injection into the Indian economy, driving demand and employment across an array of industries. The wedding industry, often referred to as recession-proof, encompasses a vast ecosystem of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that depend heavily on this peak season. The scale of the anticipated business further solidifies the crucial role that cultural and religious festivities play as key economic drivers in India, generating massive opportunities for traders and service providers nationwide and contributing significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sustained positive momentum from the festive season into the wedding season paints an exceptionally promising picture for the final quarter of the fiscal year for the Indian retail and services sector.
