New Delhi: A digital standoff has erupted between Indian Railways and stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra following the release of his latest YouTube episode, Jan Hith Mein Jaari. The video, which launches a scathing critique of the national transporter’s safety protocols and spending priorities, drew a sharp reaction from the Ministry of Railways, which dismissed the content as a malicious attempt to tarnish its reputation.
The Official Rebuttal
Reacting to the viral video, the official “Fact Check” handle of Indian Railways on X (formerly Twitter) issued a stern denial. The Ministry characterized Kamra’s assertions as “misleading,” arguing that the comedian selectively presented data without context. The Railways contended that the video deliberately ignores significant infrastructure upgrades currently being implemented across the network and accused Kamra of attempting to “sabotage the image” of the institution. The Ministry further advised the public to verify information independently before circulating such claims.
Kamra’s Allegations: Staffing Crisis and ‘Zombie’ Workforce
At the heart of Kamra’s critique is the alleged vacancy of over 1.5 lakh safety-critical positions, specifically among Track Maintainers and Loco Pilots. The comedian argued that this manpower shortage has forced existing employees into inhumane working conditions.
According to Kamra, railway staff are frequently compelled to work shifts ranging from 14 to 20 hours, often involving consecutive night duties. He described these exhausted workers as functioning like “zombies,” creating a high-risk environment where human error becomes inevitable due to fatigue.
Budget Priorities: High-Speed Rail vs. Safety Systems
The video also scrutinized the financial disparity between “prestige projects” and basic safety mechanisms. Kamra highlighted the massive investment in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train, estimating the cost at roughly Rs 281 crore per kilometre.
He contrasted this figure with the “Kavach” anti-collision system, which he claimed costs a fraction of that amount—approximately Rs 50 lakh per kilometre. Kamra argued that despite Kavach being a critical safety necessity, it remains underutilised while funds are diverted to high-speed corridors. He further alleged that budget allocations for routine track renewals have seen a steep decline, signaling a shift away from fundamental maintenance.
The Plight of the General Passenger
Kamra also touched upon the changing composition of train coaches. He alleged that the Railways is prioritizing air-conditioned (AC) coaches at the expense of General and Sleeper classes, despite the latter catering to the vast majority of the distinct population. This policy, he claimed, has forced lower-income travelers into dangerously overcrowded non-AC compartments, resulting in stampede-like situations at major transit hubs.
Additionally, the comedian questioned the ethics of the Railways retaining over Rs 1,000 crore annually from wait-listed tickets issued to passengers who are ultimately unable to travel.
Counter-Criticism
The Railways’ method of rebuttal also drew attention. Pratik Sinha, founder of the fact-checking website Alt News, questioned the Ministry’s approach. Reposting the Railways’ statement, Sinha remarked that merely stamping the word “misleading” on a screenshot does not constitute a factual refutation, suggesting that the Ministry failed to provide data to counter the specific figures cited by Kamra.
Key Takeaways
- The Conflict: Indian Railways disputed Kunal Kamra’s video alleging poor safety standards, labeling it “misleading.”
- Staffing: Kamra claims 1.5 lakh safety posts are vacant, leading to an overworked, sleep-deprived workforce.
- Cost Comparison: The video contrasts the expensive Bullet Train (Rs 281 cr/km) with the affordable Kavach safety system (Rs 50 lakh/km).
- Passenger Issues: Allegations include overcrowding in non-AC coaches and high revenue retained from unconfirmed tickets.
